Disposable Underground newsletter: October 25, 2019

Welcome back to the newsletter, highlighting what’s new at the blog since the last update. It’s been a while since I sent one of these out, so I hope you enjoy and still appreciate these popping up in your inbox.

Photo of Mickey Leigh and Joey Ramone

Mickey Leigh has a record out called Mutated Music, and it’s worth checking out. Leigh says his goal is “to rescue rock ‘n’ roll one song at a time.” Sounds like he’s making good on that. Here’s my review and another one’s below.

Detail from the cover from the Sarinvomit and Eggs Of Comorrh split EP

This music review is for a split EP from the bands Sarinvomit and Eggs Of Gomorrh called Economium Of Depraved Instincts. It’s pretty obnoxious/awesome. Read up on it if those band names sound interesting.

Rockers at the National Book Festival

When I went to the National Book Festival I took a few pics of rockers that attended to show their love for books. The pics are up on my blog’s Tumblr page. This is informally part of a series of such photosets.

Billy Bragg appearing on Democracy Now!

I’m a fan of Billy Bragg, for his writing as well as his music, and recently he was on Democracy Now! to talk about his new book and play some songs. It was an informative interview and it’s always nice to hear the guy play.

Image from a "Punk the Capital" banner saying "Building A Sound Movement"

Punk the Capital is “a documentary film and archival project,” and features “a new perspective on DC punk history and rare, unseen footage of bands,” as the film’s website describes. I’m looking forward to the DC screening.

Image of a mushroom cloud

Nuclear war might be a topic you’re thinking about covering for your metal band’s lyrics (c’mon, it’s within the realm of possibility), so here’s some content about the climate effects of a nuclear war that you can consider.

Screen grab of a poll posted on this blog

The above bullets are from a poll I’m running on the blog (I like to think they’re fun) about how bands meet their end. The underground musician Chris Connelly says it’s always power dynamics and drugs/alcohol. You?

Screen grab of a pull quote saying "Celebrities backing Extinction Rebellion say 'yes, we are all hypocrites' in open letter to media"

Extinction Rebellion is a group agitating for action on climate change, and the open letter it published has some cool musicians that I respect as signatories, among others. (This isn’t the first time I’ve blogged about open letters either.)

Finally, I gave the blog somewhat of a facelift. I hope it’s now easier to find things you might want to read.

More info on what’s new at the blog next time. Thanks for reading!
