Pussy Riot, a Russian performance collective as much as a punk band, started a “Riot Days” European tour Thursday in Berlin. The tour poster is below.
The group was able to convene for rehearsals and hit the road after one of its leaders, Maria Alyokhina, left Russia where she was under a form of house arrest. She evaded authorities and fled the country by undergoing a harrowing journey that included a disguise, multiple attempts to cross borders, smuggled travel documents, avoiding detection, and an international network of allies. Valerie Hopkins and Misha Friedman have the story at The New York Times.
The tour is named after Alyokhina’s book of the same name, and Pussy Riot is raising money for Ukraine with the shows. “We condemn Putin’s criminal aggression and help those who suffer from war in Ukraine,” the group posted on Facebook when it announced the tour.
