Sulphur English is the new album, out now on various formats and streams, from Richmond, Virginia’s Inter Arma.
What does it sound like? Well, Inter Arma is a doom band. Fortunately, it’s not a bluesy one or a stoner one. Instead, there’s a healthy dose of (slow, doomy) Morbid Angel, and later Swans too, like on the track “Stillness.”
Besides the peppering of acoustic guitars and piano, there’s spicy effects on the vocals that give a creepy mood to the album. D.U. can hear a little Unearthly Trance in the vocals in a few places.
Sometimes purposefully avoiding dynamic can make a doom album (not unlike a grindcore album) unrelenting and blunt. Inter Arma goes all-in with dynamics on Sulphur English but still delivers brutality.
D.U. doesn’t know if this is the best record since Inter Arma’s crusher Sky Burial, but it’s a great record. Check it out for yourself. Relapse Records has the whole thing up on YouTube:
