In more AI news, now you can get music stems out of songs. Platforms such as AudioShake, Traktor, and Serato can isolate stems (such as a guitar or a vocal) from a song, Tamara Palmer writes at CNET.


Subert is an alternative to Bandcamp, Bruce Houghton writes at Hypebot. Instead of the betrayals of Bandcamp, Subvert is offering collective ownership and not taking a cut.

Saint Vitus Bar, the popular and iconic venue in Brooklyn, NY, has closed. It’s a bummer, but Brooklyn Vegan has a brief remembrance. The bar’s online merch store is still open, however.

Local fixture Rebecca Burchette has run into some health issues and there’s a GoFundMe running to help her out. Reptilian Records posted with the details. Rebecca has been playing in Baltimore-area bands for a very long time and she and I were in a band together for a bit also.

Rest in Peace

Justin Chearno of the D.C. band Pitchblende died in August. He played in other bands and also teamed up with one of the guys in LCD Soundsystem to found the NY restaurant The Four Hoursemen. Chris Crowley and Tammie Teclemariam cover that part of his career at Grub Street.


Daron Beck, vocalist and keyboardist of the Texas band Pinkish Black, died in August. Besides also playing in other bands, in the 2000s he was a contestant on American Idol. Pete Freedman has the story at wfaa.com.


Tore Ylwizaker, Ulver’s former keyboard player, died last month, Nick Ruskell writes for Kerrang! Besides being a musician, Ylwizaker was also a producer.
