When I was getting in the “just metal” line at the Decibel Metal and Beer Fest in Philly this month, a guy stepped out of the “metal and beer” line and reintroduced himself as the man behind the band Chuffed and gave me a sticker. This encounter reminded me that he had previously sent me his band’s demo for review.
A Band Named Chuffed
When the editor of Deathcheese ‘zine (which I used to write for) interviewed Napalm Death back in the ’90s, his first question was, “What the fuck does ‘chuffed’ mean?” The band Chuffed doesn’t try to answer that question, but I can’t help but think of the small connection between a working-class English band like Napalm and that word that they used to say, often it seemed.
Chuffed is a one-man band from Pennsylvania playing in a dirty, lo-fi, old-school Carcass-type and Repulsion-type style, but without the blast beats—Chuffed does a lot of mid-paced circle pit riffing, which is fine by me.
Chuffed’s main man put out Demo 2025 on Bandcamp through Smashed Wrist Recordings, and the label HPGD reissued it this year, releasing a visualizer for the track “Vertigo,” a fun song, below.
