Musicians come out in support of Julian Assange of WikiLeaks

The group DiEM25 (Democracy in Europe Movement 2025), co-founded by former Greek finance minister and current secretary general of the MeRA25 party Yanis Varoufakis, is calling for a protest march and rally in London on February 22, 2020. The march and event is against the possible extradition of WikiLeaks co-founder, and DiEM25 advisory panel member, Julian Assange from a U.K. prison to the U.S.

A bunch of artists including Roger Waters, Chrissie Hynde, Brian Eno, M.I.A., and Vivienne Westwood, among others, will perform or speak at the event.

U.S. prosecutors last year charged Assange with violating the Espionage Act for publishing classified information on WikiLeaks. The charges have raised concerns about press freedom, Jon Swaine detailed in The Guardian.

Assange’s extradition hearing is on February 24. The march and event is sponsored by the Don’t Extradite Assange Campaign.
