BL’AST! “Blood” review

D.U. used to see BL’AST! ads in magazines and zines back in the day but never investigated them, and now we have another chance. Dave Grohl remixed and remastered an album’s worth of unearthed BL’AST! tapes from the ’80s, and Blood! is the result.

Coming out on September 3 on Southern Lord, Blood!‘s ten songs are a properly manic, energetic and twisted wad of fast (and slow) punk from this old California band, of the type that the label SST would be interested in. SST released two of their albums in the ’80s. The two guitars paint a wall of atonal, pissed-off sound, and the songs sometimes go in places unexpected. Maybe you could compare the band to COC or Black Flag in places.

Grohl’s work on the mixing console made these recordings sound heavy and vital. They don’t make classic music like this anymore.
